Rabbi Professor Dr. Avraham Steinberg, MD was born in 1947 in a displaced persons camp in Hof, Germany and emigrated with his parents as an infant to Israel in 1949. His father, Rabbi Moshe Steinberg, served as the Rabbi of Kiryat Yam, and tutored his son in Torah studies.

Professor Dr. Steinberg studied Talmud and Jewish law at Yeshivat Merkaz Harav Kook in Jerusalem and then studied medicine and completed his internship at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem.

Professor Dr. Steinberg served as a Medical Officer in the Israeli Air Force, and then worked as a senior Pediatric Neurologist at Shaare Zedek and Bikkur Cholim Hospitals in Jerusalem, as well as in the various Sick Funds in Jerusalem. Furthermore, Professor Dr. Steinberg served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Israeli Society of Child Neurology.

Professor Dr. Steinberg is the author of The Encyclopedia of Jewish Medical Ethics for which he was awarded the Israel Prize in 1999.

Since 2008 Professor Dr. Steinberg has served as the Director of the Yad Harav Herzog Institutes and as the head of the editorial board of the Talmudic Encyclopedia.

Since 2013 a new project has been developed under his editorship – The Talmudic Micropedia– an abridged version of the Talmudic Encyclopedia, with additions of modern issues whenever related to the Talmudic entries.

Since 1969 Professor Dr. Steinberg has researched and published extensively in the fields of general and Jewish medical ethics, history of medicine, medicine and law and pediatric neurology. He has written and/or edited 43 books and public reports in 71 volumes, 295 papers and chapters in Israeli and international Journals and books, while lecturing on Medical Ethics at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School. He lectured at 257 national and international conferences, as well as numerous public lectures in 36 cities in Israel, 33 cities in the USA and 43 cities around the world.

Professor Dr. Steinberg and his wife, Lynne, live in Jerusalem. They have three married children and thirteen grandchildren.
